C'est en l'année 1779, ma chère amie, que j'ai fait pour la première fois le portrait de la reine, alors dans tout l'éclat de sa jeunesse et de sa beauté (...). Ses traits n'étaient point réguliers, elle tenait de sa famille cet ovale long et étroit particulier à la nation autrichienne. Elle n'avait point de grands yeux; leur couleur était presque bleu; son regard était spirituel et doux, son nez fin et joli, sa bouche pas trop grande, quoique les lèvres fussent un peu fortes. Mais ce qu'il y avait de plus remarquable dans son visage, c'était l'éclat de son teint. Je n'en ai jamais vu d'aussi brillant, et brillant est le mot; car sa peau était si transparente qu'elle ne prenait point d'ombre. Aussi ne pouvais-je en rendre l'effet à mon gré les couleurs me manquaient pour peindre cette fraîcheur, ces tons si fins qui n'appartenaient qu'à cette charmante figure et que je n'ai retrouvés chez aucune autre femme. À la première séance, l'air imposant de la reine m'intimida d'abord prodigieusement; mais S. M. me parla avec tant de bonté que sa grâce si bienveillante dissipa bientôt cette impression. C'est alors que je fis le portrait qui la représente avec un grand panier, vêtue d'une robe de satin et tenant une rose à la main. Ce portrait était destiné à son frère, l'empereur Joseph II, et la reine m'en ordonna deux copies: l'une pour l'impératrice de Russie, l'autre pour ses appartememens de Versailles ou de Fontainebleau. J'ai fait successivement à diverses époques plusieurs autres portraits de la reine. Dans l'un, je ne l'ai peinte que jusqu'aux genoux, avec une robe nacaral et placée devant une table, sur laquelle elle arrange des fleurs dans un vase. On peut croire que je préférais beaucoup la peindre sans grande toilette et surtout sans grand panier. Ces portraits étaient donnés à ses amis, quelques-uns à des ambassadeurs. Un entre autres la représente coiffée d'un chapeau de paille et habillée d'une robe de mousseline blanche dont les manches sont plissées en travers, mais assez ajustées: quand celui-ci fut exposé au salon, les méchans ne manquèrent pas de dire que la reine s'était fait peindre en chemise; car nous étions en 1786, et déjà la calomnie commençait à s'exercer sur elle. Ce portrait toutefois n'en eut pas moins un grand succès.
