Motivationale Ziele spielen in verschiedenen Motivationsmodellen und bei der Erklarung von Verhalten eine zentrale Rolle: Sie beeinflussen einerseits, welche Handlungen eine Person ausfuhrt, wirken sich andererseits aber auch auf die Intensitat und die Richtung dieser Handlungen aus. In der einschlagigen Forschungsliteratur kam es traditionell unter wechselnden Bezeichnungen zu einer Dichotomisierung in Lern- und Performanzziele. Erstere beziehen sich auf das Bestreben, Kompetenzen zu erwerben, Letztere zielen darauf ab, gute Leistungen zur Schau zu stellen bzw. schlechte Leistungen zu kaschieren. Neuere Forschungsbefunde deuten jedoch darauf hin, dass Performanzziel in eine Annaherungs- und eine Vermeidungskomponente untergliedert werden sollten. Diese Unterteilung erklart die bis dahin uneinheitliche Befundlage zur Adaptivitat der Zielorientierungen zwar besser, fuhrt allerdings auch zu verschiedenen Widerspruchen und vernachlassigt ebenfalls verschiedene inhaltliche Aspekte. Neben einem Uberblick uber die empirische Forschung der letzten Dekade werden deshalb vor allem Weiterentwicklungen des Konstruktes der motivationalen Orientierungen thematisiert. Eine genaue Inspektion der Messinstrumente liefert Hinweise, dass es sich bei den bestatigenden Befunden fur einen mittleren Spezifitatsgrad motivationaler Ziele um ein Artefakt handeln konnte. In funf Studien wurde deshalb ein Messinstrument zur Erfassung der Leistungsziele verwendet, das die AdressatInnen des Leistungshandelns (Eltern, Lehrkrafte, KlassenkameradInnen und Selbst, operationalisiert uber Noten) systematisch mit einbezieht. Faktorenanalytisch konnte eingeschrankte Evidenz fur eine domanunspezifische Lernzielorientierung gewonnen werden, jedoch keine Evidenz fur domanunspezifische Performanzziele oder deren Untergliederung in eine Annaherungs- und Vermeidungskomponente. Stattdessen zeigten sich soziale Performanzziele in unterschiedlichen Auspragungen, die Zusammenhange zu verschiedenen Indikatoren adaptiven Leistungsverhaltens aufwiesen.
