Soziale Phobien, die als Situationsängste definiert sind, entstehen zumeist bereits in der Kindheit oder frühen Jugend und können sich im Verlauf manifestieren und zu schwerwiegenden Einschränkungen in der sozialen Teilhabe und dem täglichen Umgang mit Mitmenschen, bis hin zu Vermeidungsverhalten oder kompletter Isolation, führen. Die soziale Phobie ist definiert als eine Angst vor irrationalen oder unbedrohlichen Situationen des Alltags und entwickelt sich meist schleichend. Häufig beginnt eine entstehende soziale Angst mit einem Gefühl von Wertung durch Andere oder der Angst, sich vor anderen Menschen peinlich oder unangemessen zu verhalten. Diese Gefühle resultieren in einer Vermeidung von vermeintlichen Bewertungssituationen. Nach und nach werden immer mehr soziale Situationen als unangenehm oder gar beängstigend empfunden und daraufhin vermieden, sodass es in extremen Verläufen auch zur Abkapselung von sozialen und gesellschaftlichen Beziehungen und Situationen kommen kann. Die Symptome und Folgestörungen können sich seelisch, psychosozial, psychosomatisch, häufig aber auch körperlich manifestieren und so zu Beeinträchtigungen auf verschiedenen Ebenen führen. Ziel der Therapie von Menschen mit sozialer Phobie ist vor allem die langfristige Veränderung von sozialen Interaktionsmustern und somit des Verhaltensrepertoires. Langfristig arbeitet die Therapie mit Sozialphobikern so gesehen auf eine Veränderung des zwischenmenschlichen Umgangs hin. Als besonders effektiv in der Therapie von Menschen mit sozialer Angststörung hat sich die kognitive Verhaltenstherapie erwiesen, die etwa mit Trainings zur sozialen Kompetenz arbeitet. Auch pharm
