About the Book

My three part memoir Spanish Harlem in a Different Colour about growing up in Spanish Harlem from age of 12 to 24 includes a selection of poetry; and another called "Confessions of Womanizer: A Catalog of Catastrophes." That I'm not Spanish lends a twist to my Spanish Harlem memoir. Rather, I'm the product of a Bahamian mother (a Pentecostal street preacher) and an Italian street peddler, two personalities that often clashed. My mother stood up in churches and announced, "The Lord has called me to preach." The Reverend would pause and reply "Sit down woman. The Lord ain't called no woman to preach." My father, disowned by his family for marrying a "colored" or mulyan, would say, "Why don't you pray and see if God puts the rent money under the bed ?" When she preached in the streets my sister and I hid behind every available object. Passerby would say "Who is that colored women with those white children?" In point of fact, my mother although fair of skin, was identifiably a "Negro" My sister and I did look like "white kids" "Don't tell anybody you're colored," my mother advised. Given the racism of the period, her concern was understandable. Being colored doomed you to a second class existence. The issue of color, of course, was a major element to my being. The memoir focuses, as well, on my life and progress against the background, people, and incidents in El Barrio, from street child to college graduate. It deals with the issues of ethnic/racial identity and it is a "coming of age" memoir. The poems included range from street diction to classic language. The "Confessions of a Womanizer" are vignettes of women in a semi-chronological order that demonstrate both progress and failure in relationships. The women range from Jewish, Jamaican, Irish, Puerto Rican, etc.
