About the Book

Spoilt at Church is a story of young Nigerian teenagers, who are faced with the challenge of sex, sexuality, relationship, parental guidance and control, and a society that is hypercritical.

Kike grew up under strict parents, who did not stop at anything to ensure that she came out as a well-brought up teenager and a balanced adult. She and her siblings grew up under rules that were meant to be obeyed at all cost. When Kike start asking questions about life and herself, about sex and sexual feelings, her mum isn't ready to give her any answer. She would have to seek for that from the society. A teenager like herself was is too eager to teach her that sex is good and is meant to be enjoyed.

Martha is beautiful, vibrant and active, especially in the church. That didn't stop her from having a boyfriend, who is also a member of the church. He would continually demand for sex, while Martha would vehemently deny him. According to her, her husband must meet her chaste and unbroken on her wedding night. Even with that, she allows the church-boy have his way in other ways; anal, oral and phone sex. Martha didn't know she's a technical virgin until she hears a sermon that pricks her in the heart.

Martha decides to give her life to Christ and to forsake every hypocritical way. Even with her mum discouraging her that her life is good as it is, she resolves to remain true to her new conviction. She would need to inform her church boyfriend about her decision. Eventually, Martha discovers that she's pregnant from an act that she claims is a rape. Did he really rape her?

"He is responsible for the pregnancy. I made a decision at the last revival that warranted me cutting off the unholy relationship between us. He invited me to his house and raped me." - Those are the words of Martha as she stands before the church council to give the why, who and how of a 3-months-old pregnancy that she's carrying. Her father hides his face in shame. He will not be able to bear the brunt of his daughter's action especially with the evidences produced at the meeting - a nude picture, erotic messages and several others.

"This is unacceptable," Mrs. Johnson cries out.
The question on everybody's lip remains the same, who is spoiling the girls in the church?

No one would believe Martha's story, that she was raped by Jide, the praise coordinator. Even before he stands before the council to defend himself, everyone is of the opinion that he couldn't have done it, except the whole world is going crazy.
Martha is punished, ostracized and made a public spectacle by the church. She becomes a pariah, even to her parents. Her father says she has used her hand to spoil her life and will never amount to anything in the future. With no one to turn to as a pillar of support, Martha decides to end her life. Just in the nick of time, Mrs. Ndukwe, a neighbor and a good Christian caught Martha in the act. She decides to take her under her tutelage, and make her see the reason why she must not lose hope in Life. Would Martha be able to pick up the broken pieces of her life and allow hope to carry her on the wings of eagles?

Kike, the daughter of Deaconess Johnson will almost lose her life, as a result of a criminal abortion. Her mother had always said it to the ear of everyone that would care to listen, that her daughter is a virgin. How then did a staunch member of the virgins' club become pregnant? Who aided the abortion process? Who is spoiling the girls at church?
These questions and many others are answered in a story that has worn a five star accolade from those that have read it.
