About the Book

Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts rückten vor allem in der französischen Aufklärung die Fragen nach Funktion und Arten der Zeichenverwendung, nach dem Sprachursprung und nach dem Verhältnis zwischen Sprache und Denken ins Zentrum des Interesses. In diese Diskussion schaltete sich der franz. Philosoph und Naturwissenschaftler Maupertuis (1698-1759) mit zwei Schriften ein, die hier erstmals in dt. Übersetzung vorgelegt werden.
About the Author: Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis wird 1698 in Saint Malo geboren. Nachdem er fünf Jahre als Hauptmann in der Armee gedient hat, widmet er sich ausschließlich mathematischen, philosophischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Studien. Bereits im Alter von 25 Jahren wird Maupertuis Mitglied der Académie des sciences und im Laufe einer Reise nach London der Royal Society. Als einer der ersten öffentlichen Anhänger von Newtons Gravitationstheorie wird er von d'Alembert in der "Einleitung zur Enzyklopädie" für diesen Mut gerühmt. Eine wissenschaftliche Reise zur Vermessung eines Breitengrades führt ihn 1736 im Auftrag Ludwig XV. nach Lappland. Im Anschluß begibt sich Maupertuis auf Vermittlung Voltaires an den Hof Friedrich II., der ihm 1746 die Leitung der Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften überträgt. Der Versuch einer Kosmologie erscheint 1750. In diesem Werk unternimmt Maupertuis den Versuch, eine von der Physik Newtons beeinflußte Kosmologie mit einer spiritualistischen Anschauung der Natur zu verbinden. Das hier formulierte "Prinzip der kleinsten Aktion" veranlaßt Voltaire im Hinblick auf Leibniz zu einen Plagiatsvorwurf und ruft einen wissenschaftlichen Streit hervor, infolgedessen Voltaire aus Preußen ausgewiesen wird und der Maupertuis zum Rücktritt von der Leitung der Akademie veranlaßt. Beeinflußt durch die Schriften der französischen Aufklärer beschäftigt sich Maupertuis auch mit den Fragen nach Funktion und Arten der Zeichenverwendung, nach dem Sprachursprung und dem Verhältnis zwischen Sprache und Denken. Maupertius stirbt im Alter von 61 Jahren in Basel an der Schwindsucht.
