Um jeden Preis suchte er zu widerlegen, daß er dem Durchschnitt angehöre; aber das Wort Mittelmäßigkeit stand oft wie eine Fassade vor ihn hingemauert; oft umringte es ihn wie eine Mauer, längs der er rundlief; oft klang es wie der Ruf Manitobas überlaut und einzig in seiner Brust, so daß er zitternd wie ein gehetzter Hase hin und herriet, wie zu vermeiden sei, daß es offenbar werde. So sprach er denn bei allem mit. Erfindungen deutete er an in ihrer ganzen tragisch- revolutionären Größe, wenn sie überraschend auf den Markt niederkamen, Kunst, Politik, Dichtung fielen seinem gelehrigen Eifer zum Opfer. Insgeheim schrieb er Artikel für die Jägerzeitung, das freie Echo, Kunst dem Volke, der neue Staatsmann. Aber es war, als gehöre sein Name zum Text. Und doch kam es ihm ledig gerade auf die Unterscheidung, auf den Beweis seiner Existenz an. War es ihm in der Wirtschaft nicht gelungen, bei seinen Freunden den Eindruck eines Philosophen zu erregen, so behandelte er sie ungnädig, gab keine Antwort oder lehnte jede Erklärung mit verletzender Ironie ab. Den Kellner dagegen beschenkte er mit reichem Trinkgeld, guten Ermahnungen und Händedrücken. In der Elektrischen oder im ersten Halbschlaf fiel ihm der Plan zu einem Zyklus Preisgesängen auf die Freiheit des Geistes ein. Er dichtete, so dünkte ihm, die ganze Nacht - ja er raffte sich aus den Decken auf und schrieb beim Kerzenlicht eine Stunde frierend Ekstasen aus sich ab. Der Morgen war Büro, Schreibmaschinen, der Mittagstisch die versalzene Erkenntnis: Genies gehen eher zugrunde, notorisch häufiger als schlechte Köchinnen. Ihm fehlte nichts als Mut zuzugeben, daß Schwächen in der Überzahl sogar immer noch Leben sind und ein Bekenntnis fordern. Er ahnte wohl dergleichen, suchte aber krampfhaft sein Denken rückwärts zu drängen, um den Punkt zu ergründen, wo eigentlich der Fehler seiner Konstitution liege. Aber es fielen ihm
