Länder - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 2, Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg (Institut für Geschichte), Veranstaltung: Staatslehre und Staatsbeschreibung in der Frühen Neuzeit, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Niccolò Machiavelli, einer der bedeutendsten Staatsphilosophen der Neuzeit, war nicht nur Florentinischer Politiker und Philosoph, Dichter und Komödienschreiber, er war auch Geschichtsschreiber. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, zu versuchen, den Zusammenhang zwischen Machiavelli als politischen Denker und seiner Istorie fiorentine (Geschichte von Florenz) herzustellen. Die Geschichtsschreibung zu Zeiten Machiavellis war geprägt vom humanistischen Geschichtsinteresse. Beeinflusst von der klassischen Historiographie war die Geschichte an sich für die Humanisten etwas Nebensächliches. Machiavellis Schrift über die Geschichte von Florenz war für ihn etwas Einzigartiges unter seinen Werken, war er doch eigentlich mehr politischer Denker als Geschichtsschreiber. Doch die Istorie fiorentine, Machiavellis drittgrößtes Werk nach Il Principe (Der Fürst) und den Discorsi sopra la prima Deca di Tito Livio (Abhandlungen über die ersten zehn Bücher des Titus Livius), zeigt ebenso deutlich Machiavellis politisches Denken. Dennoch hat die Istorie fiorentine heftige Kontroversen ausgelöst. Während die Anhänger Machiavellis in diesem Werk die Begründung der modernen Historiographie sehen, charakterisieren es seine Kritiker als ausführliche Darstellung der Vorschriften und Regeln, wie Machiavelli sie bereits in den Discorsi und im Il principe dargestellt hatte. Eine dritte Meinung der Machiavelli-Analysten sieht in der Geschichte von Florenz den letzten Teil in der Entwicklung des Machiavellistischen Denkens. Die Geschichte von Florenz bedient sich am Material aus Chroniken oder älteren Abhandlungen über die Stadtgeschichte und ist somit kein Originalwerk im eigentlichen Sinne.
