Die mobile Kommunikation ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil dieser Entwicklung und wird von gesellschaftlichen und ökonomischen Kräften sowie einer Vielzahl technologischer Innovationen unterstützt. Mobile Marketing bedeutet Kommunikation und Vermarktung von Produkten, Services oder Dienstleistungen an Zielpersonen oder Zielgruppen über mobile Endgeräte. Die mobilen Endgeräte können sowohl von der Hardware wie auch von der Software her unterschiedlich sein. Heute ist dies neben Handhelds, Palmtops, Smartphones oder Laptops, in erster Linie das Handy. Dabei ist das Handy nicht mehr nur ein zweckmäßiges Kommunikationsmittel, sondern ein ständiger Begleiter, mit dem man unabhängig von Zeit und Raum Informationen abrufen, Gefühle ausdrücken oder wichtige Geschäfte tätigen kann. Von seiner Erfindung bis zur Überschreitung der 50 Millionen Nutzer-Grenze vergingen beim GSM-Standard weniger als 7 Jahre. Beim Festnetztelefon dauerte es vergleichsweise 50 Jahre, beim Internet weniger als 15 Jahre.1 In der Zukunft ist unser "mobiles Endgerät" vielleicht in die Jacke integriert oder wird als Brosche, Arm- oder Ohrschmuck getragen. Wie unsere mobile Zukunft genau aussieht, darüber sind sich die Trendforscher noch uneins. Ob alt oder jung, männlich oder weiblich, arm oder reich: Mobilfunkgeräte sind in. Und genau darin liegen auch die immensen Möglichkeiten für gezielte Werbung. Es eröffnen sich neue Möglichkeiten Brands, Produktinformationen oder Kampagnen mit mobilen Botschaften durchzuführen und dabei die jeweiligen Zielgruppen überall und jederzeit zu erreichen. Dessen ungeachtet ist der wirtschaftliche Höhepunkt in der Branche längst überschritten. Die Marktsättigung bei den Endgeräten ist erreicht.
