About the Book

Uwe Gerig gehört zu den wenigen Journalisten seines Jahrganges, die die Auswirkungen der Teilung Deutschlands beruflich in Ost und West verfolgen konnten. Der Autor beschreibt, wie er 1968 wegen einer abfälligen Äußerung über einen DDR-Funktionär denunziert, aus dem Journalistenverband ausgeschlossen und dann mit fünf Jahren Berufsverbot bestraft wurde. Gleichzeitig observierte ihn der Staatssicherheitsdienst durch vier IM (Inoffizielle Mitarbeiter) und legte Akten unter dem Codewort "Reporter" über ihn an. Von dieser Beschattung, der Post-und Telefonkontrolle, ahnte Gerig zwar etwas, doch erst die nach dem Untergang der DDR zugänglichen Dokumente bewiesen das ganze Ausmaß der Bespitzelung. Im Buch werden zahlreiche dieser Dokumente veröffentlicht. 1976 sollte der Journalist, inzwischen arbeitete er als Reporter für die größte Illustrierte der DDR, selbst vom Staatssicherheitsdienst als Spitzel angeworben werden. Mit welcher List er sich diesem Versuch entziehen konnte, beschreibt der Autor sehr ausführlich im Buch. Sieben Jahre später, im Herbst 1983, flüchtete Gerig mit seiner Frau aus der DDR. Der Staatssicherheitsdienst hatte trotz andauernder Beobachtung die Fluchtvorbereitungen nicht bemerkt und reagierte hilflos, wie die von Gerig im Buch veröffentlichten Dokumente beweisen. Dass es ihm mit Bluff und Drohungen gelang, seine erwachsene Tochter innerhalb von drei Monaten nach der eigenen Flucht aus den Fängen des Staatssicherheitsdienstes freizupressen, beschreibt der Autor im Buch nicht ohne Schadenfreude.
About the Author: ist Journalist. Bis 1983 war er in der DDR Reporter bei der größten Illustrierten (NBI) als Reporter tätig, dann flüchtete er mit seiner Familie nach Frankfurt/Main. Dort veröffentlichte er mehrere Bücher über die deutsche Teilung und gestaltete mit seinen Bildern 1986 die offizielle Fotoausstellung der Bundesregierung zum 25. Jahrestag des Mauerbaus. Nach dem Untergang der DDR gründete Gerig mit seiner Frau Ruth einen eigenen Regionalverlag und gab mehr als 70 touristische Bücher über verschiedene Regionen in Ostdeutschland heraus. Gerig lebt jetzt im Harz.
