Länder - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 1,3, Universität zu Köln, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit untersucht verschiedene Sterbe- und Todesrituale im früh- und hochmittelalterlichen Westeuropa. Da das Sterben einen "Übergang" zum "nächsten, jenseitigen Leben" darstellte, gab es viele unterschiedliche Sterberiten. Ein Mensch starb im Beisein von Menschen, die ihm besonders nahestanden. Jedoch gab es auch schon vor dem unmittelbaren Sterben eine Sorge über sein eigenes Seelenheil, denn letztendlich wollte man "gut und gerecht", also ohne Sünden sterben. Dafür musste man rechtzeitig Maßnahmen ergreifen. Wie genau sahen diese Maßnahmen aus? Wie stark wurden diese Maßnahmen, der Tod und das Begräbnis sowohl vom Christentum als auch von vorchristlichen und abergläubischen Kulten geprägt? Die folgende Hausarbeit versucht diese Fragen zu beantworten, indem sie zuerst eine geeignete Quelle für die Fragestellungen vorstellt, die Biografie des Autors skizziert und die Quelle interpretiert, und sich dann mit den Themen Sterbe- und Todesrituale, christliche, vorchristliche und abergläubische Merkmale bei der Vorstellung über das Sterben und den Tod und Erinnerung an Verstorbene im früh- und hochmittelalterlichen Westeuropa auseinandersetzt. Ein abschließendes Fazit soll kurz die wichtigsten Ergebnisse festhalten. Die Menschen im Früh- und Hochmittelalter mussten mit vielen Schwierigkeiten leben. Häufige Kriege, Naturkatastrophen und Hungersnöte machten das Leben schwer. Vor allem aber waren Epidemien und Seuchen, zum Beispiel Lepra oder die Pest, die größten Gefahren für die mittelalterlichen Gesellschaften. Der Tod war damit jederzeit allgegenwärtig. Jedoch war das Sterben nicht nur wegen Epidemien und Seuchen omnipräsent, sondern auch zum Beispiel wegen den Massakern während der Kreuzzüge oder dem geringeren Wert des menschlichen Lebens (schnellere und einfachere Hinrichtungen).
