About the Book

Lamarr Terell Futrell is a product of South Saint Louis who went on to matriculate through Morehouse College upon graduating from McCluer North High School. He aspires to combat what is known as the Delmar Divide in his hometown, St. Louis, Missouri. The division is described by most as "legal segregation." Imagine, if one were to take half of Bankhead, and half of Buckhead and place it on the same street, you'll have the Delmar Divide. Now, a spiritual foundation was instilled in Lamarr at birth. In growing up in church, learning how everyone has a calling. Lamarr believes he was placed on Earth to create experiences, opportunities, and assist others in finding themselves. Through his collegiate journey, he will be working towards creating an innovative art space. This space will assist those in seeking opportunities in careers they are passionate about. In addition, the space will allow those to learn to make a successful living while attaining the proper knowledge to become financially literate. In America, contribute the most to labor and economics. Yet, we suffer more from poverty, lack of resources, and opportunities more than any other race. Through this initiative, that narrative will change. As it is a task for one to seek their calling, being able to believe in who you are is a necessity.

Social Imagination is the connection between one's personal troubles and their view of the larger society. One uses their sociological imagination when they see an issue that negatively affects a group of people and says to themselves, "this isn't right." Social Imagination relates to gentrification, lack of resources, opportunities, and funding for neighborhoods, schools. Being denied an opportunity due to your identity, or due to aligning to a more "professional" look. In all, the Delmar Divide is a social problem set to provide a certain group of people with the proper resources to live the American Dream--while others struggle to make ends meet.

The fact that we romanticize power and struggle though the two do not mix is social imagination. Living in a "perfect world" is possible. What we deem as happiness, or satisfaction is determined by what is necessary, and what is destructive. Social problems exist because those with access acquire happiness by causing destruction to those who have less than them. Think of our appointed leaders, most are males with power. Everything comes down to gender roles. The idea of appointing women leaders is always mentioned. If a woman has the power to bring life into the world, what makes us think she can not run it?
