About the Book

This Civi War novel is the intimate story of people living under the stress of war. In the last months of the Civil War battles rage. General Sherman is fighting his way to Atlanta. Stough, a young romantic, longs to have his life restored. His friend Tarp, smitten with beautiful Addie, like Stough, is also avoiding the draft. Attractive young sisters, Addie and Dosie, white and black, make their living running a boarding house for travelers; their establishment pulsing with complications brought by strangers. When peace is restored, Stough takes off for New York on the SS Sea King where he meets Bernice Towne, a wealthy, Quaker lady. With the addition of Miss Towne's nephew Perceval, they occupy us for the rest of the story. In their innocence these boys delve into society - to evaluate the lives of the famous and notorious of the time. At the end, they commit an act of love for a bright little girl named Lunette, who boasted: "My name means Moonbeam."
About the Author: Jack Ragsdale began to write after retiring from his import business in New York. In early life he spent many years on the sea as a merchant marine, and encountered people from all over the world, learning important lessons on a variety of cultures. He now resides and writes in San Francisco. He is an eternal student of History. He is also the author of America's Splendid Little Wars, a history of American punitive actions in Cuba, the Philippines, Guatemala and Iran. --- "I was born in Atlanta, went to New York as a youth to join the U. S. Merchant Marine. During WWII I served as an officer on cargo ships in convoys in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. In August 1943 aboard the 'Tyson' I observed the sinking of the Liberty ship John Bell off the Tunisian coast, torpedoed by the German submarine Fenski. Aside from a collision and minor accidents, I saw no other action" said the author, Jack Ragsdale. "On a short leave in London during the Buzz Bomb attacks, I was mortified by an acid-tongued young female server who told me the advertised milk shake I ordered was not available: 'There's a war on, dontcha know, ' she told me."
