About the Book

Drawing from letters, interviews, and personal recollections, E. Clare Friedman offers an intimate biography of her Oxford tutor Ida Busbridge, a pioneer of twentieth century mathematics and physics.
About the Author: Clare Friedman (née Richardson) was born and brought up in County Durham, in northeastern England. The fourth of six children, they were poor as proverbial church mice, living in a large, cold, Victorian vicarage in a country parish. During the WWII years, the family made do on home grown vegetables and fruit, eggs from twelve chickens and milk from two goats. From 1946 to 1954 she attended St. Hilda's School, a small Anglican convent boarding school, from which she was the only student in her year to go on to University. Entrance to Oxford at that time was by exam, and she caught the eye of Miss Ida Busbridge, then Tutor at St. Hugh's College, who allowed herself one unlikely 'hunch' each year. Under the excellent tutelage of Miss Busbridge, Clare attained a first class honors degree in Mods which gave her the status of a scholar of the college; she ranked at the top of the exam list in Schools, thus earning the Junior Mathematical Prize. Clare did graduate studies in topology under the supervision of Dr. Ioan James at the Mathematical Institute in Oxford. Her doctoral thesis was awarded the Senior Mathematical Prize. While in college, Clare sang with three choirs, played on the university women's second field hockey team and captained the newly formed women's ping-pong team. Following her husband to America, Clare taught for two years at Columbia University in New York and for another two years at Quinnipiac College in Hamden, Connecticut. In 1968, when her husband was appointed to the faculty of the new medical school in San Diego, California, the family moved to La Jolla where they still live. Returning to work when her fourth child reached age 10, Clare taught at the University of San Diego for twenty years until her retirement in 2000. She still plays tennis weekly, sings in two choirs, and volunteers in the community and at church.
