Non e un caso che Jung avesse affidato a lei le riflessioni sul proprio vissuto, riflessioni che confluirono parzialmente in un celebre libro biografico pubblicato nel 1962 e considerato da molti una forma di «autoanalisi». Il materiale originale che, per varie ragioni, non fu incluso in quella pubblicazione viene ora presentato, per la prima volta e dopo non poche traversie, in questo prezioso volume composto da due parti. La prima meta accoglie sessanta ritratti autobiografici, memorie e aneddoti di Jung, narrati in prima persona e liberamente trascritti da Jaffe. Le immagini, evocate tramite associazioni spontanee, vanno dal suo percorso formativo ai ricordi intimi, che riguardano anche il matrimonio e la sua amata Toni Wolff, fino ai viaggi, come il soggiorno in Africa denso di rivelazioni. Commenti su approcci clinici e metodi terapeutici affiancano penetranti osservazioni sulla societa e grandi questioni esistenziali, come l’immagine di Dio, l’incarnazione e le rappresentazioni mitiche e oniriche. La seconda parte del saggio e costituita da un apparato storico di Elena Fischli che illumina le complesse vicende editoriali della «cosiddetta autobiografia» di Jung, intrecciando a doppio filo le vite del maestro e della sua devota allieva. Ne emerge una testimonianza che non solo restituisce nella sua pienezza la dimensione umana di Jung ma rende anche omaggio al ruolo svolto da Aniela Jaffe – ruolo fondamentale e finora sottaciuto – nel divulgare la psicologia analitica.
