About the Book

The shock and impact behaviour of structures is an extremely challenging area. It is therefore important to recognize and utilize the contributions emerging from theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on structures, as well as investigations into material properties under dynamic loading conditions. Reflecting the broad range of research work currently being carried out in academia and industry, this book contains the proceedings of the Eighth International Conference on Structures Under Shock and Impact. Of interest to engineers from military, nuclear, aeronautical, transportation and other backgrounds, the papers included cover: Impact and Blast Loads; Protection of Structures from Blast Loads; Missile Penetration and Explosion; Seismic Engineering Applications; Energy Absorbing Studies; Crashworthiness and Impact Biomechanics; Behaviour of Structural Concrete; Behaviour of Composites; Material Response to High Rate Loading.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Impact and blast loads Post-failure motion of beams under blast loads; An inverse method for the identification of strain-rate sensitivity parameters of sheet steels; Numerical investigation of a fragment protection structure; Dynamic thermo-mechanical phenomena induced in isotropic cylinders impacted by high energy particle beams; Analysis and estimation of the reactions of pipeline systems to shock impact loads; Reinforced high strength concrete beams subjected to air blast loading; Fragment impacts into concrete; Evaluation of blast loads on buildings in urban environment; Simplified analysis of square plates under explosion loading; Interactions of shock waves with a sphere and arrayed spheres; Section 2: Protection of structures from blast loads Scale testing of profiled stainless steel blast walls; Steel structures optimization to resist underwater shockwaves - explosive charges optimisation; Blast response of walls retrofitted with elastomer coatings; Determination of shear magnification factor in beams and plates subjected to blast loads; Analysis of blast loads on bridge substructures; Close range effects on a concrete wall of an underwater explosion - A numerical approach; Modelling explosions using ALE meshes: the influence of mesh refinement in pressures and in efforts induced by blast/structure interaction; Dynamic response of laminated glass under blast loading: effect of negative phase; Historic bronze window and frame blast retrofit: concept development, analysis, design and proof test Section 3: Missile penetration and explosion Design of hard-target penetrator nose geometry in the presence of high-speed, velocity-dependent friction, including the effects of mass loss and blunting; 3D simulations of concrete penetration using SPH formulation and the RHT material model; A 3D collision scheme for compressible media in a general connectivity Lagrangian formulation Section 4: Seismic engineering applications Free vibration of tall buildings using Timoshenko beams with variable cross-section; Influence of concrete prestressing and gravitational loading on plastic energy dissipation and ductility of RC elements in seismic zones; Experimental validation of a semi-active control system based on magnetorheological dampers; The effect of the vertical earthquake motion in near field; A specific model for in-plane non-linear dynamics of masonry walls including some texture effects; Seismic resistance of a reinforced concrete building before and after retrofitting - Part I: The existing building; Seismic resistance of a reinforced concrete building before and after retrofitting - Part II: The retrofitted building; Dynamic analysis of slender towers made of no-tension material with limited compressive strength Section 5: Energy absorbing studies Experimental investigation of plastic collapse of aluminium extrusions in biaxial bending; Floor serviceability under dynamic loading; Shock and impact energy absorbtion and control by active material based systems; The enhancement of earthquake resistance of a MRF by using tube inversion devices Section 6: Crashworthiness and impact biomechanics Coach passive safety enhancement in rollover accidents by multi-point optimization methodologies; Numerical simulations and full-scale impact testing to develop appropriate crash barriers; Finite element analysis of a transit bus Section 7: Behaviour of structural concrete Optimal impact resistance design support system for RC slabs by genetic algorithm; Behavior of an impacted reinforced concrete slab: percussion and punching analysis; Simulation strategy for impact against a reinforced concrete industrial building; Cyclic behaviour of a reinforced concrete braced frame with high damping rubber devices Section 8: Behaviour of composites The blast performance of novel fibre-metal laminates; Composite materials and bird-strike analysis using explicit finite element commercial codes; Failure of masonry under explosion effect; Impact response of transversely isotropic circular cylindrical shells Section 9: Material response to high rate loading Experimental investigation of the influence of the specimen geometry on Hopkinson tensile test results; Polypropylene foam behavior under compressive loading at high strain rate
