Als "Imagineer", "Prophet des neuen öffentlichen Raumes", sogar "Master of Kitsch" bezeichnen ihn andere. Die Rede ist von Jon Jerde, einem der erfolgreichsten zeitgenössischen Architekten. Für seine Gebäude, vornehmlich Hybride aus Shopping Malls, Freizeiteinrichtungen und öffentlichen Plätzen, gibt es mindestens ebenso viele Namen: "gigantisch[e] Implantate", "architecture of pleasure" oder "Ooohh-Aaahhrchitecture" sind nur einige. Der Architekt aus Kalifornien entwirft seit 1977 mit seiner Firma, The Jerde Partnership, weltweit sogenannte "Urban Entertainment Center", mit dem Ziel, strukturschwache Innenstädte und Stadtviertel wiederzubeleben. Prominente Beispiele, wie Horton Plaza, Universal CityWalk oder Canal City Hakata, dienen als "Ersatz"-Stadtzentren, die nicht nur die Konsumenten aus den Vororten zurück ins Zentrum holen, sondern gleichzeitig einen Ort schaffen sollen, der Bürgern als neuer, öffentlicher Raum dient. Das nennt Jerde "Placemaking". Oft betont der Architekt, dass er keine Gebäude designt, sondern den Raum dazwischen, den Platz, auf dem die Menschen "work, eat, stay, shop, play, wander and live", sodass aus der "community of consumers" eine echte Gemeinschaft würde. Kritiker zweifeln jedoch genau diesen Anspruch auf Authentizität an. Ein anderer "Imagineer" seiner Zeit, für den der Platz in der Stadt eine ebenso wichtige Rolle spielte, war Camillo Sitte. Der Wiener Architekt veröffentlichte 1889 - fast 100 Jahre vor der Fertigstellung von Jerdes erstem Urban Entertainment Center, dem Horton Plaza in San Diego - sein theoretisches Hauptwerk "Der Städtebau nach seinen künstlerischen Grundsätzen" und eröffnete damit die Diskussion um die Rolle der Kunst beim Bau von öffentl
