Jahrhundert leben immer mehr Menschen in Städten. 2008 lebten erstmals mehr als die Hälfte der Erdbevölkerung in Städten, 2025 werden es voraussichtlich 61% sein. Bisher war das Muster der Stadtentwicklung also durch Wachstum geprägt. Dass das Wachstum von Bevölkerung, Fläche, Arbeitsplätzen und der damit verbunden Wirtschaftskraft endlich ist, beschreibt das Phänomen der schrumpfenden Städte. Zwar ist der globale Prozess der Verstädterung weiterhin ungebrochen, doch verlieren Großstädte auf der ganzen Welt, beispielsweise in den USA, Russland, Großbritannien oder Deutschland, stetig an Einwohnern. Seit 1950 ist das endogene Stadtschrumpfen, das eine Schrumpfung ohne Einwirken äußerer Einflüsse wie Kriege, Epidemien, Natur- oder Umweltkatastrophen beschreibt, eine "zumindest parallele Normalität" der Stadtentwicklung geworden. Besonders davon betroffen sind ehemalige Industriezentren in Westeuropa und im Osten Nordamerikas, die hauptsächlich durch Eintreten von ökonomischen Strukturkrisen, Entstehen von Leerstand in Wohnungen, Büro- und Gewerbeflächen und Bevölkerungsrückgang gekennzeichnet sind. Ein besonders extremes Beispiel für diese Schrumpfung ist die amerikanische Stadt Detroit: Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhundert war sie Zentrum der Automobilindustrie und erlangte durch den Zuzug vieler Arbeitskräfte großes Wachstum. Im Jahr 1950 erreichte die Stadt ihren Höhepunkt mit knapp 1.850.000 Einwohnern, seitdem ist die Zahl stetig rückläufig. Bis heute verlor Detroit fast eine Million Einwohner, was eine Schrumpfungsquote von beinahe 50 Prozent bedeutet.
