About the Book

A young photographer dies suddenly in a car accident in Calvi, Corsica. The funeral is officiated by her uncle and godfather, who despite having promised to keep his feelings in check will not be able to prevent all the memories of his niece from flooding his mind during the liturgy: the young girl fascinated by photography, the teenager captivated by a nationalist militant, the prestigious wedding photographer or the local newspaper reporter who one day left everything behind to travel to Yugoslavia as a war correspondent.

In this acclaimed work, the Goncourt award winner Jérôme Ferrari explores the gulf between reality and how we see it, at the same time masterfully combining a vivid portrait of a free woman with the historical political events that shook Corsica at the end of the 20th century.

Full of humanity, this novel takes us from the failure of our own aspirations and desires to the ambiguous links that are established between a true image, a photograph, reality, and death.
