Este libro narra las vivencias de un joven quien a la edad de 17 años, decide marcharse a escondidas de sus padres en busca del sueño americano. Viajaba con las manos vacías, con sus inquietudes e incógnitas. Mientras miraba el horizonte por la ventanilla del avión, se preguntaba si algún día lograría realizar el sueño americano. Al llegar a los Estados Unidos, su padre le dice que si no regresa de inmediato se arrepentirá. En cambio, su madre trata de convencerlo pidiéndole que regrese para ayudarla a encontrar una botija que estaba enterrada en el pueblo donde ella nació. A los pocos días este joven se encuentra en una factoría, ganando un salario que ni siquiera le alcanzaba para sobrevivir. La jefa al darse cuenta quienes eran sus padres, se acerca y le dice al joven: "Cuando tu madre estaba embarazada de ti, ella trabajó en este mismo lugar". Ironías de la vida, aquel joven había estado allí en el vientre de su madre, sin saber que 17 años más tarde estaría queriendo escapar de aquel lugar. Un día, en medio de su desesperación le pide a Dios que le ayude a reunir 100 mil dólares. Al darse cuenta que su oración no era contestada, se pregunta si estaba siendo demasiado exigente. Entonces baja la cantidad a 90 luego 80, 70. hasta que finalmente le dice a Dios que se conformaría con tan solo 10 mil dólares. Un día se dio por vencido, así enterando su sueño sin imaginarse que un día Dios le respondería. Mientras pasaban los meses, en uno de los momentos más difíciles de su vida, él logra su primer sueño al conocer a los Yankees de Nueva York. Aquella noche mientras estaba rodeado por los mejores jugadores de las grandes ligas, se pregunta si estaba soñando. Al darse cuenta que no era un sueño, nace en él nuevamente el deseo de seguir luchando, aunque muchas veces sus sueños se desvanecían. Finalmente, el día menos esperado Dios le responde a su oración. Aquel joven se encuentra en el banco con un cheque en la mano. La empleada al mirar que era un hombre hispano, vestido común y corriente, con enojo ella le pregunta: ¿Cómo tú puedes entrar aquí con tanto dinero? Él la mira a los ojos y con una sonrisa en su rostro le responde: "¡El sueño americano, el sueño americano aun está vivo!"
