Debemos darnos cuenta de que un bucle que consta de una señal, una rutina y una recompensa forma y refuerza los hábitos. El hábito se ve reforzado por la recompensa, que se activa con la señal. La práctica de fumar puede ser provocada por el estrés y el alivio que sigue podría servir como recompensa. Meditar ayuda a romper este patrón. Nos volvemos más conscientes de nuestras señales y hábitos cuando meditamos. Empezamos a reconocer los signos de estrés y cuándo queremos fumar. El patrón se vuelve evidente. Sin embargo, ser consciente es sólo el primer paso. Sustituir la rutina por una más saludable es el siguiente paso. Aquí es cuando la práctica regular de la meditación se vuelve realmente beneficiosa. Cuando estamos estresados, tenemos la opción de meditar en lugar de encender un cigarrillo. De esta forma, la práctica de la meditación ocupa tiempo y desarrolla un nuevo hábito, sin dejar tiempo para el hábito anterior. Se trata de elegir una estrategia alternativa para reducir el estrés en lugar de reprimir el deseo de fumar.
