Dies hatte negative Auswirkungen auf die Lieferantenzuverlässigkeit und verursachte hohe Kosten. Die Leistungsbewertung der Lieferanten verlief unsystematisch, subjektiv und fand oft nur zu den Jahresgesprächen statt, Einkaufspreise und Konditionen standen im Vordergrund. Heute zwingen die stärkere Verflechtung internationaler Beschaffungsmärkte, kürzere Innovations- und Produktlebenszyklen, steigender Preisdruck sowie immer besser informierte Endverbraucher die Unternehmen zur Suche nach neuen Optimierungs- und Wertschöpfungspotenzialen. Aufgrund des erhöhten Margen- und Leistungsdrucks entscheiden viele Unternehmen, den Fokus auf ihre Kernkompetenzen zu setzen und enger mit ihren Lieferanten zusammen zu arbeiten. Immer mehr Unternehmen gelangen zu der Erkenntnis, dass der Preis nur einer von vielen wichtigen Faktoren ist und dass die Gesamtleistung der Lieferanten entscheidend ist. Langfristige Geschäftsbeziehungen zu ausgewählten Lieferanten, die Nutzung ihrer Innovationen sowie eine ökonomische, soziale, und gesellschaftspolitische Verpflichtung sind zentrale Bestandteile einer zeitgemäßen Einkaufsstrategie. Somit wird heute erfolgreiches Supplier Relationship Management (SRM; zu Deutsch: Lieferantenmanagement) durch ganzheitliche Lieferantenbewertung zum zentralen Wettbewerbsvorteil, da Lieferanten für die Leistungsfähigkeit des Händlers wichtiger geworden sind.
