SEGUIDA DE OTROS INEDITOS POLARES DE E. A. POE «He aqui la primera y mas extrana de las novelas pertenecientes al subgenero de las "Tierras Huecas". A principios del siglo XIX, John Cleves Symmes propuso su Teoria de las Esferas Concentricas, segun la cual nuestro planeta es hueco y habitable por dentro, existiendo acceso a su interior en ambos polos. Aunque apoyo su hipotesis con entusiasmo e intento reunir fondos para una expedicion que la confirmara, no tuvo exito. Sin embargo, sus ideas germinaron en un mundo muy diferente, el literario. Symzonia (1820) fue la primera novela basada en las teorias de Symmes y hay quien sostiene que fue su verdadero autor, aunque este extremo no ha llegado a demostrarse. Fue tambien la primera novela utopica norteamericana y es un clasico de los relatos de navegacion. El narrador, el capitan Seaborn, comienza una expedicion similar a la sonada por Symmes: a bordo de un barco de alta tecnologia, el marino se interna en las aguas sin cartografiar del oceano Antartico, y acaba penetrando por la abertura austral en el interior de la Tierra hasta llegar a sus profundidades, que Seaborn reclama para Estados Unidos y bautiza como Symzonia. Encuentra alli una sociedad utopica gobernada por una aristocracia benevolente, que se ha librado de sus individuos mas molestos expulsandolos a una lejana colonia. Los symzones cuentan con vehiculos aereos, barcos de propulsion a chorro, trajes ignifugos tejidos con telas de arana y una misteriosa arma de destruccion masiva». Como complemento a Symzonia se han reunido algunos textos de Edgar Allan Poe inspirados por la fiebre polar desatada por las campanas de Symmes. Entre ellos La Atlantida (1838), sobre «un continente maravilloso en el gran oceano del Sur, descubierto durante un viaje dirigido por Alonso Pinzon, comandante de la nave metalica americana Astrea». Aparecida en 1820 y firmada por un tal capitan Adam Seaborn, Symzonia: Un Viaje de Exploracion es un misterio literario. Aunque sin mas pruebas para ello que su titulo y ciertas evidencias internas, su autoria es universalmente atribuida a John Cleves Symmes (1779-1829); mas sea o no obra de este, cierto es que los verdaderos protagonistas de la novela son Symmes y su teoria de la tierra hueca. Nathaniel Ames, J. N. Reynolds, Edgar Allan Poe y otros exploradores con la mirada perdida en los hielos antarticos, se han visto envueltos en esta extrana epopeya gotico-polar y tienen su hueco en esta antologia.
