Wie nähert sich ein britischer Regisseur von Künstlerporträts solch einem Ereignis, welches als eine Antwort / Tat auf den jüdisch-deutschen Konflikt zu werten ist? Es gilt das Verhältnis der eingesetzten Filmaufnahmen in Bezug zum realen Ereignis des Geiseldramas zu analysieren, denn der Film bezieht keine Stellung. Vielmehr scheint die Dokumentation ein Porträt eines Ereignisses zu sein, ein Porträt, wo die Sache für sich steht. Es liegt also vielmehr an dem Zuschauer, welche Wirkung der Film auf ihn hat oder inwieweit Emotionen ausgelöst werden. Es gibt Stellungnahmen, aber keine Auseinandersetzung, keine Erläuterungen, die das Ereignis inhaltlich untermauern. Die Dokumentation führt ein Eigenleben, dessen Relevanz einer Auseinandersetzung bedarf. So wird anfangs die Filmmittel in seinen Einzelteilen analysiert und in den historischen Kontext gesetzt, um daraufhin sein politisches Momentum zu bewerten, immer in Bezug zum Regisseur und der eingesetzten Filmsprache. Der 1999 erschiene Dokumentarfilm "Ein Tag im September. Das Geiseldrama München 1972", produziert von Arthur Cohn unter der Regie von Kevin Macdonald, gilt als "Der Bestseller der Zeitgeschichte" und "spannender als jede Thriller". Wie diese Zitate andeuten, ist Macdonald ein Regisseur, der keine Grenze zwischen Dokumentation und Spielfilm zieht. "Ein Tag im September" setzt sich zusammen aus Archivaufnahmen, Interviewszenen - mit Opfern, Angehörigen der Todesopfer, deutschen und israelitischen Politikern, sowie dem Attentäter Jama Al Gashey und fiktiven Szenen.
