About the Book

Enter a world where a jackal passes the best judgement, a goat and tigress can be best friends and the cruel always get their due... The stories in this book are a part of a large collection of Indian folk tales recorded by the British researcher William Crooke on his travels through the country. An Indophile with a keen interest in Indiașs people and their varied cultures, Crooke looked at folk lore and local stories as a great way to know more about the culture and the people of India. The more than 4 tales in this book, such as ȘThe Grateful Goatș (The goats wit and generosity outmatch all those around him!), ȘThe King of Miceș (You donșt want to mess with the inhabitants of Mouseland!) and ȘThe Valiant Blackbirdș (A blackbird takes on a king to save his wife!), feature interesting and clever characters, both humans and animals. These stories ȓ some popular, others half-forgotten ȓ passed on orally from generation to generation, have made their way into this book, making it both a fascinating and rare collection.

About the Author

William Crooke (1848–1923) was a British Orientalist and a key figure in the study and documentation of Anglo-Indian folklore. He had a keen interest in both ethnology and folklore, on which he was considered to be a leading authority during his time. As a member of the Indian Civil Services, he found abundant material for his research in the ancient communities of the country. William Henry Denham Rouse (1863–1950) was born in Calcutta, India and was a pioneering British teacher. Rouse studied at the University of Cambridge. He was known for his English translations of Homers epic poems Odyssey (1937) and Iliad (1938).
