Eine aktuelle interdisziplinäre Herausforderung an die historischen Wissenschaften?, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit untersucht die päpstliche Friedensstiftung im englisch-französischen Krieg von 1294-1298. Mit dem Schiedsgericht Papst Bonifaz' VIII. von 1298 gelang es, unter der Bedingung ebenso komplexer wie umstrittener Rangverhältnisse ein im Prinzip egalitäres Verfahren zur Friedensherstellung ins Werk zu setzen. Als Schiedsrichter durfte Papst Bonifaz dabei allerdings nicht etwa qua Amt, sondern ausschließlich "privat" agieren (tamquam in privatam personam). Die bisherige Forschung hat hierin eine Beschädigung der päpstlichen Würde und eine Schwäche des Verfahrens insgesamt gesehen: War ein Schiedsgericht mit einem um seine autoritative Papstmacht beschnittenen Schiedsrichter nicht von vornherein zum Scheitern verurteilt gewesen? Hintergrund dieses Urteils bildet die in Teilen defizitäre spätere Umsetzung des Schiedsspruchs. Statt damit jedoch das gesamte Verfahren allein von seinem Ergebnis her zu beurteilen, nähert sich diese Arbeit dem Friedensprozess aus einer neuen Perspektive: In der päpstlichen Rollenunterscheidung wird ein voraussetzungsreicher "Kunstgriff" identifiziert, der einen völkerrechtlichen Umgang noch lange vor einem kodifizierten Völkerrecht und trotz des spannungsreichen Verhältnisses zwischen Papst- und Königtum ermöglichte. Jenseits einer überzeitlichen Machtpolitik-Analyse richtet sich der Blick damit auf den kulturspezifischen Sinn und eine sich daraus erschließende prozedurale Rationalität "päpstlich-privater" Friedensherstellung, wie sie am Beispiel des Schiedsspruchs von 1298 zu beobachten ist. Aus der Perspektivverschiebung vom Ergebnis des Schiedsgerichts hin zum Verfahren selbst ergibt sich eine Reihe neuer
