Ausgehend von Äußerungen Julio Cortázars legt Viviana Alvarez-Schüller dar, dass Tangozitate in seinem literarischen Werk eine größere Rolle spielen als bislang vermutet. Dank beeindruckender Tango-Kompetenz nimmt sie den Leser mit auf eine sehr aufschlussreiche intertextuelle Spurensuche. Dabei erliegt sie nie der Versuchung, die Bedeutung des Tangos in Cortázars fiktionalem Kosmos über Gebühr zu vergrößern. Sie zeigt die ambivalente Haltung Cortázars der dominanten Populärmusik seiner Heimat gegenüber: Während er sie einerseits kritisch als effektives Mittel peronistischer Kulturpolitik betrachtet, würdigt er sie andererseits als prägnantes Symbol moderner Argentinität. Eine kritische Sicht des Tangos zeichnet sich vor allem in seinem Frühwerk ab. In der Erzählung Las puertas del cielo (1951) erscheint er als Musik der mit monströsen Zügen versehenen cabecitas negras, entfaltet aber eine derartige Wirkung, dass er sogar den milieufernen Erzähler in seinen Bann zu schlagen vermag. Gegen die in manchen Tangotexten geforderte Anpassung an die herrschenden Verhältnisse ("no te metás") wenden sich zwei Gedichte aus der gleichen Werkphase, die im Rückgriff darauf zur Trauer über das Argentinien Peróns animieren. Aber auch noch in der späten Erzählung La escuela de noche wird der Tango als Lockmittel für eine totalitäre Ideologie verwendet, die angesichts staatlich-militärischer Vereinnahmung des Einzelnen mit Le Peras Silencio Schweigen gebietet. In Cortázars späterem OEuvre steht der Tango allerdings auch für die aus räumlicher und zeitlicher Ferne betrachtete, wenn nicht ersehnte Welt von Buenos Aires: "Me junta mis dos mundos", bekennt der Pariser Exilant in seinem kaum bekannten Buch Monsieur Lautrec. In einem der in Salvo el crepúsculo gesammelten und teilweise vom Cuarteto Cedrón vertonten Gedichte wird etwa die in Mano a mano besungene verlorene Geliebte durch die auf der anderen Seite des Atlantiks zurückgelassene Privatbibliothek ersetzt.
