About the Book

Fires are awakening deep within the Earth-dormant for millennia. The Great Mother is angry and the world will soon learn the power of her wrath.

At the base of Mount Rainier, twenty-six-year-old Yara Del Rey gathers data for her dissertation in geology. A talented and promising young volcanologist, Yara is alarmed by the recent rumblings of the legendary volcano.

When a team of NASA and USGS scientists kidnap Yara off the side of Mount Rainier, she is whisked to Wyoming, where a greater threat stirs within the bowels of an ancient caldera. Yara is plunged into the politics and the greed of a multi-billion-dollar NASA plan to pump chilled water into the lava chambers of the Yellowstone volcano. The NASA plan is designed to cool rising temperatures inside the volcano and extract an unlimited source of geothermal energy-something Yara warns will lead to an apocalyptic catastrophe.

Yara's warnings go ignored and after she separates from the team of scientists, she hires ex-Navy pilot Clayton Red Sky, to fly her over Yellowstone in a hot-air balloon to assess the condition of the caldera. Before they can depart, disaster strikes and sends Yara and Clay on a desperate journey to escape the oncoming shock wave and billowing clouds of fiery ash.

A scorched earth and a race against time stand in the way of Yara and her six-year-old daughter Kalani, thousands of miles away in Tacoma, Washington.

EDITORIAL REVIEW

"Reviewed By Alma Boucher for Readers' Favorite

Taquoma is an environmental thriller by Kevin D. Miller. Yara is collecting data to complete her dissertation for a Ph.D. She is a talented and promising young volcanologist. A doctorate will enable her to buy a house near her parents for her and her six-year-old daughter. The USGS arrived at Mount Rainier and force Yara to go to Wyoming with them. There Yara is expected to join forces with an exclusive club comprising NASA and the USGS. The team of scientists examines data and plans to execute their strategy for the project. They are going to drill vents around the volcano and by injecting cold water at high pressure, they hope to help cool the magma chambers. Yara warns them against doing it, and she gets fired. Yara hires Clayton Red Sky to fly her over Yellowstone to assess the caldera when it erupted.

I was intrigued by the plot of Taquoma. It was fueled by conflict and crisis. In this thrilling story, the apprehension builds slowly until the volcano finally erupts. Kevin D. Miller does justice to this disaster and the events that follow. It is fast-paced and full of action and there is never a dull moment. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat and it was a nail-biting experience. The characters were well-developed, and they all have a purpose. They were unusual, relatable, and strong throughout the story. It is skillfully written. Kevin has created a realistic story filled with drama while building tension with all the twists and turns. I thoroughly enjoyed Taquoma and recommend it highly."
