Technik gerät dabei sowohl auf Seiten der Produktion, Reproduktion und Distribution von Musik als auch als programmatisches Element in den Blick. Hanson zeichnet die Geschichte der Geburt der Kunst aus der Technik, die ästhetischen Gründe ihrer Abwertung und die Re-Etablierung der Technik in der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts nach: vom Zukunftsmusiker Wagner über Expressionismus, Futurismus, der Musik am Bauhaus bis hin zu den ästhetischen Konzepten der Neo-Avantgarde. Die Maschine, kybernetisch begriffen als Anordnung von Regeln und Gesetzen der Transformation, wird so auch in der Kunst zum Katalysator der Transformation klassischer Ästhetik. Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts war die Technik auf bisher ungekannte Art und Weise in das Lebensumfeld und Lebensgefühl der Menschen eingedrungen. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, daß sie zunehmend auch eine Position in der künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung der Zeit einforderte. Der Umstand aber, daß Technik auch in der Sphäre der Kunst noch als etwas Neues und Fremdes - oftmals sogar als etwas Gefährliches und Bedrohliches - wahrgenommen wurde, ist ein deutliches Indiz dafür, daß Kunst sich als autarke Kategorie inszenierte.
