Jahrhunderts, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "It is a triumph more glorious, because far more useful to mankind, than was ever won by conqueror on the field of battle." Diese prägnanten Worte des amerikanischen Präsidenten James Buchanan entstammen einer telegraphisch übermittelten Nachricht an die Königin von England vom 16. August 1858. Wenige Tage zuvor, am 5. August, war der Atlantic Telegraph Company unter Cyrus W. Field die erste erfolgreiche Verlegung eines Telegraphenkabels durch den atlantischen Ozean gelungen. Die Botschaft Buchanans verleiht der immensen Euphorie und Begeisterung Ausdruck, die seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts durch die Erfindung und Genese des elektromagnetischen Telegraphen in breiten Kreisen der amerikanischen Bevölkerung, Presse und Wissenschaft hervorgerufen worden war. Die Arbeit möchte sich vor diesem Hintergrund vor allem dem Verhältnis zwischen technischer Vision und tatsächlicher historischer Entwicklung des elektro-magnetischen Telegraphen widmen: Im Zentrum steht dabei einerseits die Frage, welche Hoffnungen und Ideen von den Zeitgenossen mit der Ausbreitung des neuen Kommunikationsmittels verknüpft wurden. Demgegenüber wird eine Untersuchung der empirisch erfassbaren Folgen der technischen Entwicklung einen weiteren inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt bilden. Im Ergebnis soll so ein kontrastierender Vergleich zwischen Realität und Utopie bzw. Vision ermöglicht werden. Hierzu scheint zunächst eine kurze Auseinandersetzung mit den Charakteristika der vortelegraphischen Kommunikation sowie der frühen Entwicklungsgeschichte der Technologie sinnvoll. Einer Beleuchtung der strukturellen Weiterentwicklung des neuen Kommunikationsnetzwerkes in den Vereinigten Staaten wird sich die Untersuchung der Herstellung einer ersten transatlantischen Telegraphenverbindung a
