Terrazo es una magnífica colección de historias cortas puertorriqueñas publicadas por primera vez en el 1947 que ilustran la vida en el campo durante el alza de las industrias azucareras americanas. Mucho tiene que decir la obra sobre el sufrimiento general del trabajador y jíbaro del campo, aplicando el énfasis en la comunidad de color y en la perdida general de una patria. Terrazo es un libro que se inclina a la representación realista, y cruda, de lo que ocurrió en nuestra isla a mediados del Siglo 20. Estas historias son refrescantes y muy necesitadas para balancear un poco el contenido del libro ya que una y cada historia de este libro deja sus mensajes claros y nos enseña que desde hace mucho, hemos estado sufriendo la pérdida perpetua de una patria. Abelardo Díaz Alfaro utiliza una prosa bellísima, evocando la cultura campesina puertorriqueña y que se siente como si estuviese pintando el paisaje con palabras. En el mismo hay historias que dejan claro que son vivencias del mismo Alfaro. La forma en que organizó las historias es excelente, comenzando con la del Josco, una narración simple pero efectiva, de la pelea entre el toro de la isla y un toro americano que lo reta en posición de padrote. Alfaro usa ambos toros y los personajes que los rodean como símbolos que expresan su desasosiego sobre la descarga americana en la isla, por eso dice mucho al final de la historia, el Josco prefiere sacrificarse él mismo antes de ser dominado por el yugo. Las implicaciones de este final se hacen claras y sin duda muchos de los campesinos de la época se debieron sentir igual. En "El Fruto", es la historia de un campesino llamado Tello y su esposa que pierden su más reciente hijo a causa del hambre, y al final el protagonista no puede más y se quita la vida dejando atrás una familia y un sinnúmero de preguntas que dejan volar la imaginación. Esta historia muestra una tragedia domestica que toca de manera muy cruda la mortalidad, la frustración, el deber de criar y el linaje familiar. "Bagazo" es la historia de un hombre considerado ya obsoleto por el mayordomo de una central azucarera y por consecuencia es exiliado del trabajo. A pesar que todavía tiene la fuerza para trabajar es considerado "Viejo". Con una familia que mantener, las penas lo hunden en el alcohol y lo lleva a un final trágico. Esta historia tiene muchas similaridades con "El Fruto" y la narrativa constantemente evoca la central como un gran monstruo devorador, que en sus entrañas hierve sangre y sus restos son Bagazo. En "El Gesto de la Abuela", vemos a una mujer tomar acción cuando unos americanos quieren comprarle la finca por una gran suma de dinero y ella se niega. Esta historia habla del sentido patriótico, no importa cuánto dinero te den, la patria no se vende. Incluso viviendo bajo las mismas condiciones de los otros campesinos, ella decide quedarse. Cómo ella misma dice al final: "Yo no vendo un pedazo de mi patria". Las Tres Historias de Peyo Mercé son graciosísimas, nos daremos cuenta que este personaje va a ser de las suyas con su inteligencia y maña. Abelardo Díaz Alfaro logra crear magia con estas historias, aquí la vida laboriosa del campesino cobra vida y se convierte en leyenda.
