La terre c'est le lourd, c'est le grave par excellence, qui tend vers le centre du monde. C'est le froid et le sec, c'est la source de tous ces metaux que l'homme reve de maitriser, de transformer. Derriere celui qui regarde le sol et imagine, se profile l'alchimiste. Le Moyen Age, surtout a partir du XIVesiecle, a ete aussi une epoque ou l'alchimiste a joue un role non negligeable dans la constitution du savoir. D'ou la necessite, si l'on veut englober tout le discours portant sur la Terre, de faire une place a l'alchimie. Pris dans la richesse, le foisonnement de cette pensee et de cette ecriture multiformes par excellence qu'offre le Moyen Age, le theme de la Terre se revele donc etre un vecteur fondamental d'etude des savoirs et des mentalites de l'epoque.
