After vaccinations banished it to the history books, no one ever expected a second major epidemic of the bubonic plague. But it's here, and deadlier than ever-sweeping around the world and resistant to every form of defense medical science can throw at it.
And in a society changing as quickly as the disease is spreading, survival is the ultimate test. When rules and morals are forgotten, the corrupt are quick to take advantage-making it a tough time to be alive, and an even tougher time to be separated from home and family.
That's the situation Jimmy Burke finds himself in: staying with relatives on their farm miles from his hometown when the plague strikes, ravaging the countryside. But the teen is determined to make it back to his family, and when he comes across a girl named Dana looking for the same thing, he knows he's found an ally-a friend-for the long haul.
The pair has plenty of obstacles to face on their journey however, including vigilante rulers, the ongoing threat of illness, and a rapidly changing world.
For now, they might have their humor and determination to keep them going-but in the end, only one force controls the fate of humankind.
