Der Teufel und die Hölle sind ihrer Natur nach eng verbunden, jener als der Inbegriff alles Bösen, als der unsichtbar wandelnde Geist, Verderber und Verführer der Menschen und zugleich als Fürst der Hölle, als Richter und Strafvollstrecker an den Verführten und Verdammten, diese als das Reich, wo alles Böse seine Sühne findet und der infernalischen Bosheit des Teufels der freiste Spielraum gelassen wird. Wer die Geschichte beider schreiben will, muss sie wegen ihrer innigen Beziehung zusammen betrachten, und besonders ist die Kunstgeschichte, wenn sie in einer ikonographischen Abhandlung die Typen des Teufels und der Hölle während der einzelnen Jahrhunderte feststellen will, zur gemeinsamen Betrachtung gezwungen, da das künstlerische Bild beide nur zu oft wie z. B. in der Darstellung des jüngsten Gerichtes verbunden zeigt. Bisher hat die Kunstgeschichte im Gegensatz zur Theologie und Litteraturgeschichte auf eine Abhandlung über den Teufel und die Hölle so gut wie verzichtet. Über jenen existieren freilich zwei Studien, welche jedoch das Thema nur streifen und ohne Rücksicht auf die Chronologie im Einzelnen nur ein Gesammtbild geben wollen. Über die Hölle fehlt jede Arbeit. Dagegen finden sich in Sammelwerken, welche aufzuzählen zu weit führen würde, über beide Hinweise, ebenso in einigen Veröffentlichungen von Miniaturen, sowie in Studien über die Ikonographie des jüngsten Gerichtes. Eine systematische Be- und Durcharbeitung dieses Stoffes steht aber noch aus, und auch das, was wir im Folgenden zu bieten wagen, soll ohne völlige Erschöpfung des Gegenstandes nur als grundlegende Vorarbeit dazu dienen.
