Wielands Abderiten-Roman ist einer der frühesten Fortsetzungsromane der deutschen Literatur. Zwischen 1774 und 1780 erschienen die noch wenig untergliederten Fortsetzungen im Teutschen Merkur. Ihnen folgte 1781 die in fünf Bücher eingeteilte Geschichte der Abderiten, die so auch Eingang in die Werkausgaben fand. Nachdem im Band 11.1 der O�mannstedter Ausgabe die Fortsetzungsgeschichte präsentiert worden ist, in der man dem Autor über einen längeren Zeitraum beim Schreiben über die Schulter blicken kann, enthält Band 16.1 die endgültige Buchfassung, die Einblick in den �berarbeitungsprozess gewährt. Erstmals sind somit das work in progress und sein Resultat bequem nebeneinander vergleichbar und gestatten einen unvergleichlichen Einblick in Wielands Arbeitsweise, an dem sich, wie Goethe es nennt, sein unermüdlich zum Besseren tendierender Fortgang studieren lä�t.
Diesen besonderen Einblick in Wielands Werkstatt gestattet ausgerechnet einer der grö�ten Narrenromane, der über blo�e Schildbürgerstreiche weit hinausgeht und das Narrentreiben zugleich zu einem satirischen Gesellschaftsroman einer Narrenpolis formt, in die sich wie in einen Narrenspiegel blicken lässt. Dieser Höhepunkt einer lachenden Aufklärung mit der Pointe der entvölkerten Stadt begleitet Wielands Weimarer Anfangsjahre und bezieht, was ihm an Erfahrungen zugrundeliegt, aus seiner Vaterstadt Biberach, aus Zürich, aus dem Mannheimer Nationaltheater, ohne auf diese biographischen Hintergründe beschränkt zu bleiben. Der gelehrte Dichter, der die europäischen Literaturgattungen in die deutschsprachige Literatur gelenkt hat, erweist sich im Roman wie der in dessen zeitlicher Umgebung entstandenen Literatur- und Kulturkritik mit einem Nietzschewort als "Lichtspitze" der Tradition, dem von Menippos von Gadara über Lukian von Samosata, Erasmus von Rotterdam bis zu Laurence Sterne kaum eine Quelle verborgen geblieben ist.
