About the Book

Do you live or work near the Thames? Do you own a boat or holiday on its waters? Do you walk its towpaths or frequent its pubs, cafes or restaurants? If so, then this is a book for you. If you, or anyone you know, like days out and discovering new places or have an interest in the history of charming towns and villages in a most beautiful part of England, or are fascinated by life in the past or are intrigued by the different types of bridges, walkways, tunnels, ferries that have existed along the river, then, again, this book is for you. Travelling along the complete length of the river from its source in a field in Gloucestershire to its estuary where it meets the tides of the North Sea, I have photographed every public crossing. With each one I have provided information about what exists today and some history about previous crossings on the site. The book gives you a flavour of life on the river over past centuries and takes you back to a time when barges were towed up and down carrying goods, when tolls were charged to pass over and under and across, when traction engines were too heavy for ancient bridges, when gradients were too steep for wagons and carriages and carts and when timber bridges were more of a hindrance than a help in crossing the waters of the Thames. Uniquely, photographs and writing combine in a potpourri of design and information and impressions of the 152 crossings that feature in this book.
About the Author: Mark is a 'local boy' with many close connections to the Thames Valley. He grew up in Reading. Bit by bit he moved along the river living just outside Goring-on-Thames and then Benson and Ewelme before finally settling in Oxford in 2001. He started teaching in Reading and then moved into Oxfordshire where he has taught ever since, for the last 25 years as head teacher of a large primary school in Oxford itself. Retirement has given him opportunities to develop his passion for travel, photography, history and writing.
