Die These ist: Theater kann - wie in der physischen Welt - auch in einer computergenerierten Umgebung erlebbar werden. Um das zu ergründen, wird zunächst in das Medium der virtuellen Realität eingeführt, dessen Wirkung beschrieben und die Dimension synthetischer Welten erklärt. Im Anschluss daran zeigen die Eigenschaften der virtuellen Welt von Second Life, dass sich diese Plattform als Labor für eine Untersuchung von Theater am besten eignet. Als Nächstes wird der weitläufige Begriff Theater eingegrenzt, um Faktoren zu erhalten, die einen Vergleich physischer und virtueller Welt zulassen; zu diesem Zweck werden wesentliche Elemente des Theaters extrahiert. Dabei spielen die Entstehung in der griechischen Antike, die Entwicklung bis heute durch namhafte Vertreter wie Shakespeare und Schiller sowie die Kontroverse des Theaters in der Gegenwart eine Rolle. Damit sind die Vorbereitungen getroffen, auf Grund derer das Theater anschließend einer technischen und psychologischen Funktionsprüfung in der virtuellen Welt von Second Life unterzogen wird. Illustrierend dabei verhilft die Analogie des Marionettentheaters zu einer Vorstellung und legitimiert gleichzeitig die virtuelle Welt als Ort für Theater. Darüber hinaus wird die Kombination von Theater und Computer in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur erörtert, um daraus Rückschlüsse auf die Wirkungsweise beider Medien zu ziehen.
