Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2, Universität Wien (Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Literatur und Gesellschaft, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit untersucht im ersten Teil Theodor Fontanes realistisches Literaturkonzept, welches vor allem durch eine eindeutige Abgrenzung von der romantischen Literatur gekennzeichnet ist. Die Literatur der Romantiker, so Fontanes Kritik, ginge auf die gesellschaftlichen Probleme seiner Ära nicht adäquat ein; an ihre Stelle müsse die realistische Literatur treten, die sich mit tatsächlichen Problemen der Zeit befasst. Im zweiten Teil wird Fontanes Gesellschaftskritik allgemein beleuchtet und schließlich wird im dritten Teil auf Fontanes Beschäftigung mit Frauenproblematiken eingegangen. Theodor Fontane gilt zweifellos als der bedeutendste deutschsprachige Vertreter des Realismus, oder genauer, des poetischen Realismus, der mit seinen meist im Bildungsbürgertum spielenden Werken wohl die einzigen deutschsprachigen Werke des Realismus von Weltrang schuf. Keinem anderen deutschen Autor dieser literarischen Richtung ist es gelungen, eine derartige Weltgeltung durch vergleichsweise regionale Schauplätze, meist im brandenburgischen gelegen, zu erlangen. In den meisten seiner Werke vereinen sich Gesellschaftskritik in Form der z.B. Frauenproblematik mit literaturästhetischen Qualitäten, die mit ein Grund für den bleibenden und zeitgenössischen Erfolg seines Schaffens sind; dies gilt im besondernen für seine beiden späten Meisterwerke "Effi Briest" und "Der Stechlin". Der literarische Realismus kann als Antwort auf zutage tretende, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse des 19. Jahrhunderts im Bereich der Medizin, Philosophie, Psychiatrie sowie ab der zweiten Hälfte der Soziologie verstanden werden, die enorme Auswirkungen auf das "Bild" des Menschen hatten. Psychische Leiden wurden nicht mehr salopp als Wahn beschrieben und abgetan, sondern als ernstzunehmen
