zurTheoretischenPhysik Mit diesem mehrbändigen Werk lege ich ein Lehrbuch der Theore- schen Physik vor, das dem an vielen deutschsprachigen Universitäten eingeführten Aufbau der Vorlesungen folgt: die Mechanik und die nic- relativistische Quantenmechanik, die in Geist, Zielsetzung und Met- dik nahe verwandt sind, stehen nebeneinander und stellen die Grund- gen für das Hauptstudium bereit, die eine für die klassischen Gebiete, die andere für Wahlfach- und Spezialvorlesungen. Die klassische El- trodynamik und Feldtheorie und die relativistische Quantenmechanik leiten zu Systemen mit unendlich vielen Freiheitsgraden über und legen das Fundament für die Theorie der Vielteilchensysteme, die Quant- feldtheorie und die Eichtheorien. Dazwischen steht die Theorie der Wärme und die wegen ihrer Allgemeinheit in einem gewissen Sinn alles übergreifende Statistische Mechanik. Als Studentin, als Student lernt man in einem Zeitraum von drei Jahren fünf große und wunderschöne Gebiete, deren Entwicklung im modernen Sinne vor bald 400 Jahren begann und deren vielleicht di- teste Periode die Zeit von etwas mehr als einem Jahrhundert von 1830, dem Beginn der Elektrodynamik, bis ca. 1950, der vorläu gen Voll- dung der Quantenfeldtheorie, umfasst. Man sei nicht enttäuscht, wenn der Fortgang in den sich anschließenden Gebieten der modernen F- schung sehr viel langsamer ist, diese oft auch sehr technisch geworden sind, und genieße den ersten Rundgang durch ein großartiges Gebäude menschlichen Wissens, das für fast alle Bereiche der Naturwissensch- ten grundlegend ist.
About the Author: Florian A. Scheck, Professor emeritus der Universität Mainz, studierte an der Universität Freiburg. Diplom in Physik 1962, Promotion in Theoretischer Physik 1964. Habilitation an der Universität Heidelberg 1968. Lehr- und Wanderjahre am Weizmann Institut in Rehovoth, an der Universität Heidelberg und am CERN in Genf. Leiter der Theoriegruppe des SIN/PSI und Titularprofessor an der ETH Zürich. Seit 1976 Professor für Theoretische Physik an der Universität Mainz. Zahlreiche Aufenthalte als Gastwissenschaftler und Gastprofessor in Helsinki, Montpellier, Marseille, San José (Costa Rica), Bogotá und anderen.
