About the Book

Do old houses have souls? A whimsical look at old houses with pictures taken by the author of old houses decaying and collapsing. If old houses have souls, do they reflect the souls of those who have lived in them: their, personalities, their "humaness," their own decay? The author uses as reference houses which he, himself, has lived in but which no longer exist. He speculates, as well, about other houses in various states of decay, their previous occupants, and their spiritual destiny.
About the Author: Carl Fowler is retired from the English Department of Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas, where he served as chair during the last years of his tenure. He was born in the Texas Panhandle on a farm near Farwell, Texas. His mother was a widowed school teacher who remarried when he was eight years old and moved with him to the home of her new husband on a farm near Ft. Worth, Texas, where Carl attended a small country school until the beginning of World War II. He and his family moved into the city as a result of gas rationing. His step father was a barber and was not allowed enough ration stamps for the twelve-mile drive into town. Carl finished his public education in the city where he graduated from high school in 1949. Returning to his roots, he moved in with relatives in Amarillo but eventually moved back to Ft. Worth where he worked first as an apprentice glazier and then as a journeyman glazier until he was drafted into the army in 1954 during the Korean War. After being discharged from the army in 1956, he worked again as a glazier until, in 1957, he enrolled in the Texas College of Arts and Industries (Texas A&I) under the G.I. Bill, graduating in 1960. After receiving his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, he spent time as a social worker in Corpus Christi, Texas. But, again, the call of his Panhandle roots led him back to Amarillo where he worked once more as a glazier while attending West Texas State University at night, earning a Master's Degree in English. He was employed at Amarillo College in 1966 and retired in 1997. Carl lives near Amarillo with his wife, Mary. He has one daughter, three step sons, several grand children, and two great grandchildren.
