About the Book

If Bukowski and Flannery O'Connor would have had a child and read it only Raymond Carver for his bedtime stories, then this collection would have been the result. Dark and relevant to this detached generation, They Always Leave shows us the inevitability of everyone we know leaving us in some manner and the tragic comedy of human actions that comes along with it. In the second part of this collection Roof Alexander writes of thieves that can't be put in jail, of the ones who steal pride, hearts, beauty, and reality. These stories evoke the delusions of love, the beauty of destruction, the unreasonable affect of time, and the desire of fame and its cause of irrational behavior. Alexander is able to capture the inner humiliation of youthful naivety while still leaving open the possibility of life. Though the stories deal with seemingly hopeless themes, there is still a narrow ray of sunshine left in between the details for the reader to interpret and take with them after the page has ended.
About the Author: Roof Alexander is an American novelist and short story writer, who describes his style as generational fiction. For over a decade he has been traveling the world and completing works that capture the identity of his generation. Alexander says, "I could never give back to writing what writing has given to me, so I try to re-gift it by telling stories of the inspiring humans that have passed through my life." His first release was a short story collection titled, They Always Leave. Inspired by the people that so easily came in and out of his life when he lived in Honduras, along with the contrast of the people he had left behind during his travels over the globe. Born in North Carolina he was influenced at a young age by southern writers such as Flannery O'Connor and Thomas Wolfe. As a young man he left his roots and headed west to pursue the artistic freedom he gained from reading the Beat Generation writers. Now Alexander calls Brooklyn his home where he helps lead the current artistic movement with his novel To Be Heard: A Story about Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and through co-curating the popular Williamsburg reading and music series Dangit I'm Thirsty.
