About the Book

Friday, 15th January 1966 is the day a 9-year old girl loses her Dad in a car accident. It is also the day of the first military coup in post-independence Nigeria. She returns with her mixed race mother to her ancestral home in Scotland only to find that Aberdeen was not what she imagined it would be. Amanda Susan Blake is thrown into the murky world of family politics and intrigue. She enters a battle of wits with her widowed mother. 'The fact that you are my mother does not mean that you own me.' She said through clenched teeth. 'If you did not give birth to me, another woman would have.' "Those That Trespass Against Us" is a moving novel about human frailties and the wrongs people visit on one another. It chronicles the historic events that shaped the communities and families of three 11-year old boys. The boys first meet in a Boys Scouts camp during the civil war in Owerri. They develop a bond that remains with them during the next 26 years. One of the boys eventually marries the fully-grown femme fatale Amanda Susan Blake. The relationship is doomed from the start as they are never far from the long shadow of Jonathan Fox. An Essex villain posing as a respectable English colonial, who would do anything for money, including murder. "Those That Trespass Against Us" establishes Meto Edgar Onwuamaegbu as a master storyteller. He weaves a powerful web of intrigue around the lives of his characters as they deal with the complexities of life in the failing state their country has become. He introduces unusual insight into the acrimony and rivalry between Nigerian tribes. Read about the massacre of civilians in towns you have probably never heard of ... Warri, Benin City, Umunede and Asaba. Why did the Second Division of the Nigerian Army fail to secure the eastern bridgehead on the River Niger in September 1967? You will be hard put to put this book down once you start reading. You will see bush wars in Africa in a totally different context.
