Die Paginierung obiger Ausgabe wird in dieser Neuausgabe als Marginalie zeilengenau mitgeführt. Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage unter Verwendung des Bildes: Piero della Francesca, Adams Tod (Ausschnitt), 1466. Gesetzt aus der Minion Pro, 11 pt. Über den Autor: 1724 in Quedlinburg als Sohn eines Advokaten geboren, wird der pietistisch erzogene Klopstock 1739 an der Fürstenschule Schulpforta aufgenommen und studiert später in Jena und Leipzig Theologie. 1748 erscheinen die ersten drei Gesänge seines Messias, dem biblischen Epos mit dem Klopstock den Hexameter in die deutsche Dichtung einführt. Das Publikum ist begeistert von dem leidenschaftlichen Stimmungsausdruck des freien Rhythmus. 1750 geht er nach Kopenhagen, wo ihm Friedrich V. von Dänemark eine Pension gewährt, die ihm die Fertigstellung des Messias ermöglicht. Erst 23 Jahre später vollendet Klopstock, inzwischen nach Hamburg übersiedelt, den letzten Gesang des Messias. Seine als Subskription im Autorenverlag angelegte Reformschrift Die deutsche Gelehrtenrepublik stößt auf weitgehendes Unverständnis beim Publikum. Goethe hingegen hält sie für die einzige Poetik aller Zeiten und Völker. Klopstock wird 1792 zum Ehrenbürger der französischen Republik, wendet sich aber bereits 1793 angesichts des jakobinischen Terrors entsetzt ab. Seine Stoffe und Motive stammen aus der Geschichte und Mythologie der alten Deutschen. Religion und Vaterland sind Grundlagen seines dichterischen Schaffens.
