Josef Mengele ist zu einer weltweit bekannten Symbolfigur für die Menschenversuche im Dritten Reich geworden. Oft wird allerdings der Eindruck erweckt, Mengele habe wahllos Eingriffe an Häftlingen vorgenommen, die jeder wissenschaftlichen Grundlage entbehrten. Dabei wird übersehen, dass Mengele in Kontakt mit Wissenschaftlern außerhalb des Lagers stand und teilweise in deren Auftrag handelte. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht diese Zusammenhänge. Es ist mit erheblichen Schwierigkeiten verbunden, Mengeles Versuche und seine Zusammenarbeit mit dem KWI zu rekonstruieren, da nahezu der gesamte Schriftverkehr hierzu vernichtet worden ist. Neben einem zufälligen Verlust von Dokumenten durch den Krieg wurde Korrespondenz auch gezielt zerstört. Erst durch die Einbeziehung von Zeugenaussagen und Sekundärquellen ergibt sich schließlich ein Gesamtbild. Die vorliegende Arbeit fasst zunächst Mengeles Lebensweg zusammen, um so den vielen legendenhaften Darstellungen, die sich in den Medien zu seiner Person finden, eine Rekonstruktion der Fakten entgegenzusetzen. Auch die Entwicklung des Kaiser-Wilhelm-Instituts, die Entstehung der neuen akademischen Fächer 'Rassenkunde' und 'Eugenik' sowie die Rolle von Mengeles Doktorvater Otmar von Verschuer werden kurz betrachtet. Mengeles Versuche in Auschwitz werden im Hauptteil der Arbeit systematisch dargestellt: Zwillingsversuche, die Projekte 'Spezifische Eiweißkörper', 'Tuberkulose' und 'Augenfarbe'. Mengele nahm auch Versuche vor, die wohl seiner eigenen Weiterbildung dienen sollten, und sammelte körperliche Anomalien. Wo immer sich aus den Quellen Hinweise auf eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem KWI ergeben, werden diese hier genannt. Auch die Frage nach den Ergebnissen von Mengeles Versuchen wird behandelt. Eine Arbeit über den oben genannten Themenkomplex erfordert es, Verbrechen zu beschreiben. Dies wurde allerdings nur in dem Maß getan, in dem es für die Arbeit nötig erschien, um den Leser nicht unnötig zu belasten. Es wurde hierbei eine
