Der selbständige Holzfäller Federico Blastini wird am Rande eines kleinen, die meiste Zeit verlassenen Bergdorfes in der Nordtoskana tot aufgefunden. Fast alle Tatsachen sprechen für einen Unfall-von einem Stück Totholz erschlagen, das in einem Gewittersturm von einem alten Baum abbrach. Doch es gibt viele versteckte Indizien, dass die Annahme trügt-eine verschleppte Infektion am Fuss des Opfers, die das Tragen der viel zu kleinen, nagelneuen Sicherheitsschuhe unmöglich gemacht hätte, ist eines davon . Im Wagen Blastinis findet die Spurensicherung zudem einen Zettel mit den lateinischen Worten" Aqua aurea", was einen Bezug zu einer alten Legende schafft, wonach die Dorfquelle von Biglio zu besonderen Zeiten Goldstücke ausspülen soll. Commissario Simoncini und Ispettore Gherardi beginnen mit den Ermittlungen, die schon bald von dem herrischen Staatsanwalt Della Capra verhindert und sogar ausdrücklich verboten werden. Doch immer wieder kommen einige kleine Hinweise ans Tageslicht, dass es kein einfacher Unfall war, sondern, dass jemand nachgeholfen hatte. Ausserhalb der Ermittlungen wächst die Freundschaft zwischen dem Sohn des Commissario Simone und Ispettore Gherardi trotz allen Widerstands des Commissario weiter.Dieser lebt in permanenter Angst, dass sich zwischen dem Ispettore und seinem Sohn mehr entwickeln könne, als nur eine Männerfreundschaft, denn der Ispettore macht sich offenbar nur sehr wenig aus Frauen. Als dann jedoch bekannt wird, der Ispettore sei schwer krank, ändern sich die Gefühle Simoncinis für seinen Kollegen. Aber auch im Mordfall geht es weiter-eine skurrile Bewohnerin eines Nachbardorfes sieht des Nachts Lichter im kleinen Biglio. Und es gibt einen Professor, der seit zwei Jahren wöchentlich die Gegend um den Fundort der Leiche fotografiert für seine Fledermausstudien. So entdeckt der Sohn des Commissario eines Abends, dass das Stück Totholz schon Wochen vorher vom Baum abgebrochen war, was der Mordtheorie den letzten Schliff gibt. Gherardi ermittelt auf eigene Faust, erkundet die Gegend und ihre Unterwelt aus Höhlen und Spalten. Und löst das Geheimnis von "Aqua aurea". Bei einem erneuten privaten und heimlichen Ermittlungseinsatz fällt er dem Mörder in die Hände-es ist Simone, der ihn zusammen mit seinem Vater aus der tödlichen Gefahr errettet. Doch über der gebirgigen Landschaft entladen sich die schlimmsten Regenfälle seit Menschengedenken. Der schwer verletzte Gherardi stürzt in die brausenden Fluten des Wildbachs Monia und droht darin umzukommen.
About the Author: Der Autor, Jahrgang 1972, geboren in Stuttgart/Württ. und aufgewachsen in Calw/Schwarzwald, erlernte zunächst das Uhrmacherhandwerk. Jahre später zügelte er dann in die Lunigiana, den nördlichsten Teil der Toskana. Neben der Uhrmacherei beschäftigt er sich heute mit der Natur und der gregorianischen Musik.
