Dans ce quatrième recueil signé Henri Vernes, Bob Morane nous transporte à travers trois aventures palpitantes: La Vallée des Brontosaures (10) Les Requins d'Acier (11) Le Secret des Mayas (12) Le professeur Hetzel est entré en possession d'un fragment de document dévoilant l'existence, dans une région désolée du Centre-Afrique, d'un gigantesque ossuaire de sauriens antédiluviens. Malheureusement, il meurt avant d'avoir pu partir à sa découverte. Sa fille Leni, pour respecter ses dernières volontés, gagne l'Afrique et, sur le bateau fluvial qui la conduit à Walobo, rencontre Bob Morane. Mais la présence de Bob, fait bien connu, attire la foudre. Morane est venu dans le Centre-Afrique pour chasser le fauve... à l'aide d'une caméra. Pour aider la charmante Leni, en butte aux agissements de forbans aux desseins obscurs, il se verra entraîné à travers la jungle hostile, où les Hommes-Léopards, constamment en révoltes, sèment la terreur. Il y aura aussi l'attaque des hippos et des babouins, et la menace constante d'animaux redoutables. Ni les fanatiques tueurs noirs couverts de peaux de bêtes et armés de griffes de fer, ni les monstres inconnus, ni les fauves, ni les bandits aux visages pâles ne pourront faire reculer notre sympathique héros... Une redoutable bande de malfaiteurs terrorise les grandes lignes de navigation. En pleine nuit, ils apparaissent à bord des paquebots, sans que l'on puisse savoir d'où ils sont venus. Ils pillent, rançonnent, tuent même, puis disparaissent aussi mystérieusement qu'ils sont venus. Les polices du monde entier sont sur les dents, mais cependant toutes les enquêtes demeurent vaines... Et un jour, Bob Morane, qui se rend d'Honolulu à San Francisco, tombe lui aussi sur les énigmatiques bandits et est laissé pour mort sur le sol de sa cabine. Quand il se réveille à l'infirmerie, il se souvient d'avoir vu le visage du chef des malfaiteurs... et il commet l'erreur de le révéler. Alors commencera pour lui une suite d'aventures dangereuses, qui le mènera de San Francisco à Sydney, puis de Sydney à Singapour et, enfin, à un atoll perdu du Pacifique. A plusieurs reprises, Bob croira voir le fin de sa carrière aventureuse. Pourtant, une fois encore, il triomphera de ses ennemis, mais au prix de combien de sacrifices, de combats acharnés et de souffrances ?... Une légende affirme que, dans la jungle d'Amérique Centrale, existe une cité perdue où serait entreposé le Livre d'Or des Mayas qui, peut-être, révélerait les secrets d'une civilisation aujourd'hui disparue. Le professeur Clairembart à acquis la certitude de l'existence de cette ville, ainsi que celle du Livre d'Or. En compagnie de son ami Bob Morane et de Bill Ballantine, il s'enfonce dans la forêt vierge, a la recherche de l'énigmatique cité. Partout, en plus des dangers accumulés par la nature sous les pas des explorateurs, il y aura cette mystérieuse Présence qui ne cessera de se manifester et de dresser sans cesse des piéges sur la route de Morane et de ses compagnons. Bob réussira-t-il, cette fois encore, à triompher de ses ennemis ? Réussira-t-il à pénétrer le secret des Mayas ? Morane, Clairembart et Ballantine auront mille raisons d'abandonner la partie, et l'aventure manquera souvent de trouver son issue dans la fuite, ou dans la mort.
