About the Book

Jean-Luc BOUSQUET naît en 1961, à Antony, dans une banlieue de Paris, mais grandit au Havre dans un décor de zone industrielle et d'architecture de reconstruction hâtive d'après-guerre. Comme tous les ports, une porte ouverte sur les espaces maritimes ou fermentent les rêves de voyages. L'Angleterre si proche, au bout de la Manche. L'Âge d'Or du Rock'n Roll, de la Pop Music et de la BD, qu'à l'adolescence il pratique en amateur avec quelques copains.Mais le climat normand, le ciel plombé et les engelures lui donnent des envies de soleil.

Il obtient miraculeusement son Bac, liquidant des études littéraires qui lui ouvrent les portes de la manutention et des containers, des docks et autres fosses amères. Il manoeuvre, maçonne, lave des bagnoles et comble de sa gloire intérimaire, muni d'un manche à balai orné d'un rouleau suintant le glauque, peint les allées d'usines. Travail de nuit. Il affûte ses crayons et prépare sa valise.

Il part en Italie, en Grèce et en Égypte, un voyage initiatique à travers trois civilisations majeures de l'Histoire de l'Art. Il en revient avec la volonté farouche de faire de la peinture et reprend des études en Histoire de l'Art à Nice, ou il s'est installé. Il y fait la rencontre d'un jeune peintre portugais, Manuel Taraio, qui l'invite à partager son atelier. Pendant un an, dans une relation d'apprentissage à l'ancienne, il va s'initier à la technique de la peinture à l'huile.

Parallèlement, à la fac de Nice où il poursuit ses études, il s'imprègne de Jérôme Bosch, de Michel-Ange et de la Renaissance, du Maniérisme italien, du Caravage, de Goya, de Dali en passant par Dada et le Surréalisme, de Klimt, d'Egon Schiele, jusqu'à Andy Wahrol et Jackson Pollock.

Engagé à son tour dans la quête du Graal, il commence à produire une oeuvre figurative de facture plutôt classique, tendue, sombre et intérieure. Il ne regarde pas le décor. Le sujet, cette drôle de conjugaison, seul compte. Il en explore les attitudes, la trahison gestuelle.

Mais les tableaux ne se vendent pas. La nécessité alimentaire le pousse à passer le concours de l'École Normale et à devenir instituteur tandis qu'il creuse son souterrain. Le pinceau après l'école. Il continue à peindre, fait ses premières expositions et rentre en paternité avec la naissance de son fils.

Les années passent, avec quelques succès d'estime, jusqu'à ce que les aléas de la vie l'invitent une nouvelle fois au voyage.

En 1992, il découvre la Polynésie. C'est le coup de foudre. Pour le pays et pour sa vahine.

En 1994, il se met en disponibilité de l'Éducation nationale et revient s'installer définitivement à Moorea. Il retrouve rapidement du travail et enseigne encore 3 ans à Tahiti, jusqu'au jour où l'exigence créatrice, la naissance de sa fille et sans doute les effluves tropicales, l'amènent à rompre avec le tableau noir.

Depuis 1997, il se consacre exclusivement à la peinture et expose régulièrement aux cimaises de Papeete, questionnant les rivages de la conscience et nous promenant dans une indicible rêverie.
