About the Book

English summary: Published for the first time in 1516, The Treatise on the Immortality of the Soul rapidly appeared as an emblematic publication of a mortalist position to the point of heterodoxy. Pomponazzi tries to prove, by employing a literature heavily influenced by the texts of Aristotle, that it is impossible to show a rational demonstration of the immortality of the soul. If the most immaterial function of the soul, intelligence, cannot be applied by the sensible commands provided by the imagination, then the soul depends on the body for all its operations and must consequently be corrupted by it. Pomponazzi contends traditional explanations (those proposed by Averroes, Platonists, and Thomas Aquinas) in favor of immortality. He revisits the traditional conception of the end of mankind and the relationship between speculative life and practical life, proposes a naturalistic interpretation of certain 'supernatural' or 'miraculous' phenomena, and restates the question regarding the relationship between reason and faith. This is the first critical edition (and first French translation) of De Immortalitate animAe. French text.
