Er versucht, sie dabei zu definieren und deren Wesen und Spezifizitäten hervorzuheben. Er zeigt auch den Paradigmenwechsel von der Interkulturellen zur Transkulturellen Germanistik. Von der Relativierung von Konzepten wie Kultur, Nation, Identität usw.im Zeitalter der Globalisierung ist es zudem die Rede hier. Von den Verfahren und Problemen der Inlands- und Auslandsgermamistik handelt es sich noch hierbei. Die Geschichte der Germanistik zeigt, dass sie bis im 19.Jahrhundert eine Nationalphilologie war. Erst in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren erkannt sie einen Paradigmawechsel mit der Interkulturalität, die eine Antwort auf kulturgeschichtliche Beziehungen im Zeitalter der Globalisierung ist. Ab diesem Moment spricht man von 'interkultureller Germanistik', die sich laut A. Wierlacher als eine kulturkontrastive Wissenschaft versteht. Sie ist Manuel Maldonado Aleman nach eine "auslandsbezogene Wissenschaft'', d.h. eine Wissenschaft, die über die Grenzen einer Nationalphilologie ausgeht, um sich mit Texten verschiedener Kulturen zu befassen. So befasst sich die Germanistik mit eigen- und fremdkulturellen Praxen, Prozessen, die in Werken reflektiert werden. Dabei betrachtet sie die Kultur als ein Ganzes, das einem Volk eigen angehört. Ausgehend von dem perpetuellen Austausch zwischen Völkern mit dem Zustandekommen von Formen wie Hybridität und Migrationsliteratur, in der eine gemischte Kultur reflektiert wird, meint Manuel daraufhin, dass die herkömmliche interkulturelle Germanistik nicht mehr der heutigen Lage gerecht wird.
