About the Book

Vor noch gar nicht langer Zeit, nämlich im Jahre 1887, wurde von dem Meeresbiologen VICTOR HENSEN der Begriff Plankton geprägt; etwas später, im Jahre 1890, wurde er von HAECKEL genauer definiert. Plankton ist ein Sammelbegriff für alle Lebewesen, Pflanzen wie Tiere, die von den Meeresströmungen verdriftet werden. Es ist ein recht bezeichnender Ausdruck, der sich vom Griechischen nAcxv"mv, das passiv Treibende, ableitet. Zum Plankton gehören winzige Pflanzen von wenigen Tausendstel Millimeter Größe und Tiere aller Größen bis zu den metergroßen Medusen. Viele der Planktontiere können schwimmen, aber ihre Eigenbewegungen sind gering verglichen mit den Be­ wegungen des Wassers. Obschon sie aufsteigen und absinken über mitunter beachtliche Strecken, hängt ihre örtliche und geo­ graphische Verbreitung von ihrer Umwelt ab. Der Begriff Plankton umschließt auch die frei lebenden Larvenstadien vieler Formen, die als erwachsene Tiere mehr oder weniger stationär leben wie Mollusken und Seepocken, ebenso die Larven von Bodenbewohnern wie Krabben und Würmer und schwebende Fischeier und Fischlarven, deren Kräfte nicht ausreichen, sich gerichtet und freizügig fortzubewegen. Das Plankton nimmt seinen Platz neben dem bodenlebenden Benthos und dem frei schwimmenden Nekton ein. Plankton gibt es sowohl im Süßwasser als im Meer und man spricht auch gelegentlich vom "Luftplankton", wenn man die Insekten, Samen und Sporen meint, die von Ort zu Ort geweht werden.
